the study
A study by the Institute for Applied Biomechanics in Tübingen revealed that ready-made shoes often cause unnecessary forefoot stress, contributing to orthopedic problems. The main causes are shoe shapes that are too narrow, insufficient anatomical toe room, and especially the so-called “balled toe” — a curved, uneven forefoot surface in the shoe that contradicts natural anatomy.
The study shows that a balled toe triggers numerous negative effects: undesirable deformation of the foot under load, increased energy expenditure while walking, longer ground reaction times, reduced stability, and a higher risk of stress reactions in the foot.

When walking barefoot on a firm, level surface, the rolling motion is very natural:
First the heel comes into contact on the outside, then the body weight distributes forward along the outer edge of the foot, the longitudinal arch actively springs, and finally the push-off occurs via the forefoot. The foot continuously adapts through its own muscles and the sensory feedback from the ground, automatically finding a stable, neutral plane.
In modern shoes, this mechanism is limited. The typically soft, cushioned sole, an elevated heel (heel drop), and often insufficient support for the arches alter the natural position of the foot. As a result, the foot sinks into the shoe or tilts inward or outward.
Flexitec insoles compensate these differences, stabilize the longitudinal and transverse arches, and provide a consistent, even contact surface. In this way, the foot finds a plane surface within the shoe that closely resembles the natural situation when walking barefoot on a firm surface.
